AVIF to PDF
Drag & Drop Your File Here
AVIF is a next-generation image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It produces files 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality and is increasingly used by web platforms, image CDNs, and modern cameras. The catch: software support is still catching up — many PDF editors, email clients, and document portals do not accept AVIF files. Converting to PDF makes your image universally shareable.
This browser-based tool converts AVIF to PDF without requiring any plugins or software installation.
How to Convert AVIF to PDF
- Upload your .avif file. The tool uses your browser’s built-in AVIF decoder — Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+ all support AVIF natively.
- Check the preview to confirm the image decoded correctly. Very old browser versions may not support AVIF — if the preview is blank, update your browser.
- Click Convert. The image is rendered to a PDF page.
- Download the PDF.
AVIF vs Other Modern Image Formats
| Format | Typical size (vs JPEG) | Browser support | Software support |
|---|---|---|---|
| AVIF | ~50% smaller | Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+ | Limited — catching up |
| WEBP | ~30% smaller | All modern browsers | Moderate |
| JPEG XL | ~60% smaller | Limited | Very limited |
| JPEG | Baseline | Universal | Universal |
| PNG | ~20% larger than JPEG | Universal | Universal |
Things to Know
- AVIF decoding requires a browser that supports it. Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+ work fine. If you are on an older browser and the preview does not load, update before trying again.
- AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as HDR (high dynamic range) color. The PDF output uses standard 8-bit color, so HDR detail may look slightly different.
- Animated AVIF files (similar to animated GIFs but far smaller) will convert using the first frame only, since PDF does not support animation.
- AVIF files exported from image CDNs like Cloudinary or Imgix sometimes have no file extension. Rename the file to add .avif before uploading.
Common Questions
Upload your .avif file and click Convert. The tool uses your browser’s AVIF decoder to render the image and embed it in a PDF. Works in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+.
Your browser likely does not support AVIF. Update Chrome, Firefox, or Safari to a recent version. If you are on Internet Explorer or an older Edge, AVIF is not supported — convert on a different browser.
The conversion preserves quality comparable to a high-quality JPEG export from the AVIF. The main change is that HDR color information is mapped to standard 8-bit PDF color space, which may affect very bright highlights in HDR AVIF files.
Windows 11 supports AVIF natively. On Windows 10, install the AVIF Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Alternatively, open AVIF files in Chrome or Firefox, which handle them natively without any extensions.
